What Is Sumatriptan Transdermal Used For?

A healthcare provider may use sumatriptan transdermal to treat migraine headaches in adults. This medicated skin patch delivers the medicine through a mild electric current. It narrows the blood vessels to their normal state, alleviating symptoms of migraines. There may also be times when a healthcare provider prescribes sumatriptan transdermal off-label to treat cluster headaches.

An Overview of Uses for Sumatriptan Transdermal

Sumatriptan transdermal (Zecuity™) is a prescription medication approved to treat migraine headaches. It comes in the form of an iontophoretic transdermal system (TDS), which is a patch that delivers the medicine through the skin using a mild electrical current.
Migraine headaches are a common type of headache that causes throbbing or pulsing pain, usually on one side of the head only. In addition to pain, people who have migraines commonly have other symptoms. They may be nauseous, vomit, and have sensitivity to light and noises (see Migraine Symptoms for more information).
It is not entirely known what causes migraine headaches, or why some people have migraines and others don't. Women are more likely to have migraines than men. Some people have certain things that cause a migraine to happen. Some of the more common triggers include stress, certain foods, and hormonal changes in women (see Migraine Triggers and Migraine Causes for more information).
In addition, some people have sensory signs, called auras, which warn them a migraine is about to start. An aura is usually a visual disturbance, such as flashing lights, zigzag lines, or a temporary loss of vision. Not all headaches are preceded by an aura, and sometimes auras occur without a subsequent headache. Sumatriptan transdermal is approved to treat migraines with or without aura.
A migraine headache may last a few hours or even a few days, and can be very debilitating during that time. Medications like sumatriptan transdermal are used to reduce the severity of a migraine. It will not work to prevent a migraine from occurring, or to decrease the number of migraines someone has.
Sumatriptan transdermal is just one of many medications used in the treatment of migraines. It contains the active ingredient sumatriptan. Sumatriptan is one medicine in a group known as serotonin (5-HT) agonists (more commonly known as "triptans"). It is an active ingredient in several other products that are available in a variety of forms, including:
  • Sumatriptan tablets (Imitrex®)
  • Sumatriptan nasal spray (Imitrex®)
  • Sumatriptan subcutaneous injection (Alsuma®, Imitrex®)
  • Sumatriptan needle-free subcutaneous injection (Sumavel®)
  • Sumatriptan combined with naproxen (Treximet®).
