Zolmitriptan Dosing

For people who have been prescribed zolmitriptan tablets, the usual starting dose of zolmitriptan is 2.5 mg or less during a migraine. If you are using zolmitriptan orally disintegrating tablets (which dissolve in your mouth), zolmitriptan dosing starts at 2.5 mg during a migraine. With zolmitriptan nasal spray, the starting zolmitriptan dose is 5 mg during a migraine. You should take zolmitriptan as soon as possible once a migraine starts.

Your response to zolmitriptan
Other medical conditions you may have
Other medications you may be currently taking.

As always, do not adjust your zolmitriptan dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Dosing for Zolmitriptan Tablets

The usual starting dosage of regular zolmitriptan tablets for migraine headaches is zolmitriptan 2.5 mg or less during a migraine. To get a dose of less than 2.5 mg, a 2.5 mg tablet will need to be cut in half. Zolmitriptan tablets should be swallowed with a drink of water or another beverage.

Dosing for Zolmitriptan Orally Disintegrating Tablets

The usual starting dose of zolmitriptan orally disintegrating tablets for migraine headaches is 2.5 mg during a migraine. It is not recommended that you try to cut the zolmitriptan orally disintegrating tablets in half (as they are delicate and often crumble).

When opening the zolmitriptan orally disintegrating tablets, peel back the foil lining of the blister. Do not try to push the tablet through the foil, as it is delicate and may crumble. Place the tablet on the tongue, where it will quickly dissolve and be swallowed with saliva (you do not need to take a drink of water).
