Vigabatrin Side Effects

There is a serious risk for permanent vision loss while taking vigabatrin. Other side effects may include depression, numbness in the feet, or difficulty breathing. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop these types of serious reactions. Some of the commonly reported problems include irritability, drowsiness, and dizziness. To minimize complications, let your healthcare provider know immediately if you develop anything that doesn't seem right.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Vigabatrin

Just like any medicine, vigabatrin (Sabril®) may cause side effects. However, the risk for very serious side effects, including permanent vision loss, is quite high with this medication. This is why vigabatrin is generally used as a "last resort."

Vigabatrin Side Effects to Report

Some side effects of vigabatrin are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
 
  • Vision changes of any kind, as vigabatrin often causes permanent vision loss
  • Depression
  • Suicidal thoughts or behaviors
  • Anemia
  • Numbness or tingling in the feet or toes
  • Weight gain
  • Worsening of seizures
  • Fluid retention
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
 
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Swelling of the mouth or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing.
