Tethered Spinal Cord (Cont.)

Treatment for Tethered Spinal Cord

Early surgery is recommended for children with this condition to prevent further neurological deterioration. If surgery for tethered spinal cord is not advisable, spinal cord nerve roots may be cut to relieve pain.

In adults, surgery to free (detether) the spinal cord can:

  • Reduce the size of the cysts
  • Reduce further development of the cysts
  • Restore some function or alleviate other symptoms.

Other tethered spinal cord treatment is symptomatic and supportive.

Tethered Spinal Cord: Prognosis

With treatment, individuals with tethered spinal cord have a normal life expectancy. However, some neurological and motor impairment may not be fully correctable.
