Syringomyelia is a condition that usually forms during fetal development (although it can occur with other conditions as well). This condition causes a cyst to form within the spinal cord, which will expand and lengthen over time until it destroys the center of the spinal cord. Symptoms of this condition typically begin in childhood and can include things such as headaches, chronic severe pain, and a loss of ability to feel hot or cold (especially in the hands). This condition is typically treated with surgery.
