As with any medicine, side effects of sumatriptan are possible. However, not everyone who takes the medicine will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it well. If side effects occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.
The most common side effects include:
- Tingling
- Dizziness
- Warm or cold sensations
- Feelings of heaviness, pressure, or tightness
- Flushing (redness of the skin, especially of the face)
- Chest discomfort.
For sumatriptan injection, reactions at the injection site (including redness, pain, or swelling) are also common. For the nasal spray, nasal discomfort and a bad taste in the mouth are also possible.
What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?
You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking sumatriptan if you have:
- Certain blood vessel conditions, such as peripheral vascular disease, ischemic bowel disease, or Raynaud's phenomenon
- Kidney problems, including kidney failure (renal failure)
- Liver problems, including liver failure or cirrhosis
- Any allergies, including allergies to foods, dyes, or preservatives.
Also let your healthcare provider know if you:
Tell your healthcare provider about all of the medicines you take, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
