Who Should Not Take Sumatriptan?
- Are allergic to Imitrex, sumatriptan succinate, or any inactive components used to make sumatriptan. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist has a list of the inactive ingredients used to make sumatriptan.
- Have a history of angina, including stable angina, unstable angina, or variant angina (Prinzmetal's angina).
- Have a history of heart disease, heart attack, stroke, TIA, or ischemic bowel disease.
- Have untreated high blood pressure (hypertension).
- Have used an MAOI -- including phenelzine (Nardil), tranylcypromine (Parnate), or isocarboxazid (Marplan) -- within the last 14 days.
- Have hemiplegic or basilar migraines (rare types of migraines involving loss of feeling on one half of the body or pain at the back of the head).
- Have taken ergot medications -- including bromocriptine (Parlodel®), dihydroergotamine (Migranal®), ergotamine (Bellamine-S®, Cafergot®, Ergomar®), and pergolide (Permax®) -- within the past 24 hours.
- Have taken another migraine medication similar to sumatriptan -- such as almotriptan (Axert®), eletriptan (Relpax®), frovatriptan (Frova®), naratriptan (Amerge®), rizatriptan (Maxalt®), or zolmitriptan (Zomig®) -- within that past 24 hours.
- Have severe liver problems, including liver failure or cirrhosis.
