Interactions With Sumatriptan Explained

Certain Antidepressants or Fibromyalgia Medications
Taking sumatriptan with certain
fibromyalgia or
depression medications, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (
SSRIs) or
serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (
SNRIs), can cause a group of symptoms called serotonin syndrome. These symptoms can include confusion, hallucinations, a fast heartbeat, feeling faint, fever, sweating, muscle spasms, difficulty walking, and
diarrhea. Talk with your healthcare provider before taking these medications together. Also, you should call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of these symptoms, as serotonin syndrome can be very dangerous.
Ergot Medications
Taking sumatriptan with ergot medications can increase your risk of dangerous side effects. Do not take sumatriptan and ergot medications within 24 hours of each other.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
Taking sumatriptan with MAOIs can increase the amount of sumatriptan in your blood, perhaps increasing your chance of side effects. Do not take sumatriptan if you have used an MAOI within the last two weeks.
Triptans
Taking sumatriptan with other
triptans can increase your risk of serious side effects. These medications should not be taken within 24 hours of each other.
