Rufinamide Dosage

When determining your rufinamide dosage, your healthcare provider will consider several factors, such as your age, weight, other medications you are taking, and other medical conditions you may have. Rufinamide comes in the form of a tablet and should be taken twice a day in two equal doses. It is important to take your dosage of rufinamide with food and the medication must be taken as prescribed.

Dosing for Rufinamide: An Introduction

The dose of rufinamide (Banzel™) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:

  • Your age and weight
  • Other medications you are taking
  • Other medical conditions you may have.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Recommended Rufinamide Dosages in Children

The recommended dose of rufinamide for children age four and older is based on weight. The starting recommended dose is approximately 5 mg per kg (about 2.3 mg per pound) twice a day. The dose should be increased by 5 mg per kg (about 2.3 mg per pound) every other day to a target dose of 45 mg per kg per day (about 20.5 mg per pound per day) or 3200 mg per day, whichever is less. In all situations, rufinamide should be taken twice a day in two equal doses.

Recommended Rufinamide Dosage in Adults

For adults, the recommended starting rufinamide dose is 400 mg to 800 mg per day, taken as two equal doses per day. The dose should be increased by 400 mg to 800 mg every two days until a maximum of 3200 mg daily is reached. In all cases, rufinamide should be taken twice a day in two equal doses.

If you take divalproex (Depakote®, Depakote ER®) or valproic acid (Depakene®), your healthcare provider should start you with a low rufinamide dosage (less than 400 mg per day).
