Parlodel Uses

How Does Parlodel Work?

Parlodel is a dopamine receptor agonist, which means that it binds to and stimulates dopamine receptors. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter (a chemical that transmits signals between nerves). Because the symptoms of Parkinson's disease are caused by low dopamine levels in the brain, Parlodel can help alleviate Parkinson's symptoms by acting like dopamine.
Acromegaly is caused by high levels of growth hormone. Parlodel works for acromegaly by decreasing growth hormone production by the pituitary gland.
Parlodel works for hyperprolactinemia by decreasing prolactin production by the pituitary gland.

Parlodel Uses in Children

Parlodel is approved for treating prolactin-secreting tumors (which cause hyperprolactinemia) in children. It is not approved for other uses in children. Discuss the potential risks and benefits of the drug with your child's healthcare provider.

Off-Label Parlodel Uses

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Parlodel for something other than the conditions discussed in this article. At this time, Parlodel is sometimes used off-label for the following uses:
  • Treating neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS)
  • Suppressing lactation in new mothers who choose not to breastfeed (although Parlodel is usually not recommended for this use, due to serious complications)
