Parlodel and Pregnancy

Parlodel and Infertility Treatment

Women often take Parlodel to treat infertility (caused by hyperprolactinemia). It is usually recommended that women use a barrier method of birth control (such as condoms) until normal menstrual cycles are established before trying to get pregnant while taking Parlodel. This is recommended so that you will know you are pregnant as soon as possible (which would not be possible if you have not yet established regular menstrual cycles).

Once you have a positive pregnancy test, let your healthcare provider know right away. In most situations, you will be advised to stop taking Parlodel. Parlodel is not necessary to sustain the pregnancy (only to get pregnant in the first place).

General Suggestions for Parlodel and Pregnancy

Although all women should try to stop Parlodel as soon as possible in pregnancy, some women will need to restart it for various reasons (usually due to growth of a pituitary tumor).

It is possible that Parlodel may contribute to preeclampsia or high blood pressure in pregnancy. If this happens, your healthcare provider must decide whether you should stop taking Parlodel or not.

Parlodel and Pregnancy: Final Thoughts

If you are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant, let your healthcare provider know. He or she will consider the benefits and risks of taking Parlodel during pregnancy before making a recommendation in your particular situation.
