Side Effects of Oxcarbazepine (Cont.)

Serious Oxcarbazepine Side Effects

Some side effects of oxcarbazepine, while occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
 
  • Worsening of seizures
  • Low sodium levels in the blood (hyponatremia), which may cause symptoms that include:

 

    • Loss of appetite
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Irritability
    • Excessive tiredness
    • Confusion
    • Hallucinations
    • Muscle weakness
    • Muscle spasms or cramps

 

  • Signs of an allergic reaction, including unexplained rash, hives, itching, and unexplained swelling
  • Suicidal thinking or behavior (see Seizure Medications and Suicide)
 

Less Common Oxcarbazepine Side Effects

Less common side effects of oxcarbazepine occur in 2 percent to 5 percent of people taking the drug. Because these side effects are so uncommon, it can be difficult to tell whether they are actually caused by oxcarbazepine or by factors unrelated to the medication.
