Orap Dosage

Orap comes as a tablet and is taken one or more times a day to treat tics caused by Tourette syndrome. Your individual dose of Orap will be calculated based on how much you weigh, your age, and how you respond to the medication. This amount may be gradually adjusted if needed, until the lowest effective dose is reached.

An Introduction to Dosing With Orap

The dose of Orap® (pimozide) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
  • Your age
  • Your weight
  • How you respond to the medication.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

What Is the Recommended Orap Dosage?

The usual recommended dosage of Orap when starting treatment of tics due to Tourette syndrome in adults is 1 mg to 2 mg a day, divided up throughout the day. Your healthcare provider may choose to slowly increase the amount, no more often than every other day, until a dose is found that best controls your symptoms with minimal side effects. Doses in adults should generally not exceed 10 mg a day, or 0.2 mg per kg body weight a day (0.09 mg per lb), whichever is less.
The usual recommended initial dosage of Orap in children is 0.05 mg per kg body weight (0.02 mg per lb) taken once daily at bedtime. Doses should generally not exceed 10 mg a day in children.
Once you are stable on the medication, your healthcare provider may periodically try to gradually decrease your dosage. Your tics may worsen initially right after your amount is reduced as your body becomes accustomed to the lower dose. If your symptoms have not improved within one to two weeks, your healthcare provider may choose to increase your dose.
