Vigabatrin Drug Information
A healthcare provider may prescribe vigabatrin (Sabril®) to control certain types of seizures in adults and children. This medicine is specifically used in adults who have complex partial seizures that have not been adequately controlled with other treatments. It is also approved for treating infantile spasms in children age one month to two years old.
Vigabatrin is considered a "last resort" medication, and should only be used when other treatments have failed. Permanent vision loss is a common problem that occurs with vigabatrin, so it should only be used when the benefits clearly outweigh the risks of this vision loss.
Although this can be an effective medicine for many people, not everyone can take this drug. Information on vigabatrin should be reviewed with your healthcare provider before taking the product to help ensure a safe treatment and minimize risks. For instance, people who have depression or a history of suicidal behavior may not be able to safely use vigabatrin.
