Dimethyl Fumarate Drug Information

When used for treating relapses associated with multiple sclerosis, dimethyl fumarate (TecfideraTM) works by reducing inflammation and protecting the cells from damage. This prescription medicine is approved for use in adults only.
 
Although dimethyl fumarate may help in multiple sclerosis treatment, not everyone can use this drug. Safety information should be discussed with your healthcare provider before starting treatment to minimize your risk for certain complications. For instance, people who have problems with low white blood cell counts or those with a current infection may not be able to safely use this medicine.
 
Dimethyl fumarate comes as capsules that are taken twice a day. Most people who receive this medicine will tolerate it well; however, side effects are possible and include nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal (stomach) pain.
