Precautions and Warnings With Naratriptan

There are several precautions and warnings with naratriptan to be aware of, such as those concerning an increased risk for serious heart problems associated with the drug. Other warnings and precautions to be aware of with naratriptan concern interactions that can occur when the drug is taken with other medications. Before you start taking naratriptan, be sure to notify your healthcare provider about any medical conditions you may have, such as high blood pressure, heart problems, or blood vessel conditions.

Naratriptan: What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?

Before taking naratriptan hydrochloride (Amerge^®), you should tell your healthcare provider if you have:

Heart problems of any kind, especially a history of heart disease, angina, an irregular heart rhythm, or a heart attack
A history of stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA or "mini-stroke"), or other bleeding in the brain (such as a subarachnoid hemorrhage)
High blood pressure (hypertension)
High cholesterol
Certain blood vessel conditions, such as peripheral vascular disease, ischemic bowel disease, or Raynaud's phenomenon
Diabetes
Kidney problems, including kidney failure (renal failure)
Liver problems, including liver failure or cirrhosis
Depression
Gone through menopause
Any allergies, including allergies to foods, dyes, or preservatives.

Also, let your healthcare provider know if you:

Are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
Are breastfeeding
Smoke
Have a family history of heart disease.

Make sure to tell your healthcare provider about all of the medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
