Biperiden Hydrochloride Information
Biperiden hydrochloride (Akineton®) is a prescription medication that belongs to a class of drugs called anticholinergics. It is approved to treat the following conditions:
- Parkinson's disease and other similar conditions (when used in combination with other medications)
- Movement or muscle tension disorders (known as extrapyramidal symptoms) caused by antipsychotic medications.
In addition, it is sometimes used "off-label" to treat excessive drooling.
This medication works by blocking a certain chemical in the nervous system. As a result, it helps reestablish a normal balance of chemicals. Biperiden comes in tablet form and is typically taken one to four times a day.
Before beginning treatment with biperiden, information on this medication's potential risks should be fully reviewed with your healthcare provider. Also, tell him or her if you have any other medical conditions or are taking any other drugs, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
