Drug Interactions With Ethosuximide
The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when ethosuximide is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
Certain Antibiotics or Antifungals
Some antibiotics or antifungal medications can increase the level of ethosuximide in your blood, increasing your risk of ethosuximide side effects. Talk with your healthcare provider before combining these medications.
Certain Anticonvulsants
Some anticonvulsants can decrease the level of ethosuximide in your blood, perhaps making it less effective. In addition, ethosuximide may affect the levels of other anticonvulsants in your blood. Your healthcare provider may need to adjust your dose of these medications.
Protease Inhibitors
Protease inhibitors may increase the level of ethosuximide in your blood, increasing your risk of ethosuximide side effects. Your healthcare provider may recommend a lower ethosuximide dose if you are taking a protease inhibitor.
Valproic Acid (Depakene) or Divalproex Sodium (Depakote, Depakote ER)
Valproic acid or divalproex sodium can affect the level of ethosuximide in your blood (usually increasing the level, although it has also been reported to decrease the level). Your healthcare provider may need to adjust your ethosuximide dose.
