Nervous System Home > Clobazam Dosage
Clobazam comes as a tablet or a liquid that is taken once or twice daily. The recommended dosage of clobazam will vary from person to person, but will depend primarily on age, weight, and other medications you are taking. Do not suddenly stop taking this medicine, as doing so can cause dangerous complications.
An Introduction to Your Dosage of ClobazamThe dose of clobazam (Onfi™) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
- Your age and weight
- Other medications you are taking
- Other medical conditions you may have.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
Clobazam Dosing GuidelinesThere is no one "set-in-stone" way to dose this medication. The drug is more effective at higher amounts; however, with higher dosages of any medication usually comes a higher risk for side effects. No matter how the drug is prescribed, a lower amount should be used initially, with dose increases occurring at intervals of at least one week or more.
One suggested way is as follows, for individuals weighing 66 pounds (30 kg) or less:
- Days 1 through 6 -- 5 mg once daily
- Days 7 through 13 -- 5 mg twice daily
- Days 14 and beyond -- 10 mg twice daily.
For individuals weighing more than 66 pounds, one recommended way is as follows:
- Days 1 through 6 -- 5 mg twice daily
- Days 7 through 13 -- 10 mg twice daily
- Days 14 and beyond -- 20 mg twice daily.
If you have liver disease, are elderly, or are taking certain medications that interact with clobazam (see Drug Interactions With Clobazam), lower doses may be recommended.
Do not stop taking clobazam suddenly, as severe withdrawal symptoms may occur. Your healthcare provider will help you gradually lower your dosage over a period of several weeks.
