What Is Levetiracetam XR Used For?

How Does It Work?

During a seizure, brain cells (neurons) may fire as many as 500 times a second, much faster than the normal rate of about 80 times a second. It is not known exactly how levetiracetam XR works to prevent partial seizures in people with epilepsy. In fact, studies have shown that levetiracetam XR does not work like any other seizure medication.
 

Levetiracetam XR Use in Children

Levetiracetam XR is approved to treat partial seizures in adolescents age 16 years and older. It is not approved for use in younger children (because it has not been adequately studied in this age group).
