Some of the potentially serious side effects of glatiramer that require immediate medical attention include anxiety or chest pain that does not go away a few minutes after an injection, fainting, or allergic reactions. Skin problems at the injection site are the most common side effects, however. These glatiramer side effects may include redness, pain, and infection.

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with glatiramer acetate (Copaxone^®); however, not everyone who takes the drug will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Side Effects of Glatiramer to Report

Some side effects with glatiramer, while occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:

Anxiety, agitation, or chest pain right after an injection (if this does not go away after a few minutes)
Fainting
Signs of an allergic reaction, including unexplained rash, hives, itching, unexplained swelling, wheezing, or difficulty breathing or swallowing.
