Side Effects of Felbamate

Common Side Effects

Felbamate has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, one group of people received felbamate, while another group was given either another seizure medication or a placebo (a "sugar pill" that does not contain any active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the other medication or the placebo.

In these studies, the most common side effects of felbamate included:

  • Insomnia -- in up to 8.6 percent of people
  • Indigestion or heartburn -- up to 8.6 percent
  • Vomiting - up to 8.6 percent
  • Upper respiratory tract infections (such as the common cold) -- up to 8.6 percent
  • Tiredness or lack of energy -- up to 6.9 percent
  • Headaches -- up to 6.9 percent
  • Constipation -- up to 6.9 percent.

Other common reactions (occurring in 3 to 5.2 percent of people) included:

Final Thoughts

You may experience some or none of the felbamate side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, there is no way for your healthcare provider to know beforehand if you will have problems with a medicine that you have never tried.

Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects while taking the drug or if something "just does not seem right." While it may not be related to felbamate, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
