How Does It Work?

Dantrolene belongs to a group of medicines known as muscle relaxants. However, unlike other muscle relaxants, dantrolene works directly on the muscle. It is thought to work by interfering with calcium release from calcium storage sites in the muscles known as sarcoplasmic reticulum. The sarcoplasmic reticulum release calcium during muscle contractions. By interfering with calcium release, dantrolene causes the muscles to relax.
